This cross is encrusted with mud, which I think adds to the overall beauty of the piece. A light rub on the middle, however, revealed black enamelling.

what a splendid item! Love all the Mauritanian "stuff" with its style of the little knobs, and because I have been travelling with Mauritanian desert guides (in Mali. Mauritanian, Moroccon, Tuareg, and other cultures are to be found there. This cross is something very very beautiful and certainly also rare! Lucky you!
