Very ususual! Gazelles and parrots? Did you get some information about the motifs? The rest looks Essoauiran ( the rose motif)
yes i agree with patti, looks for me essaouira jewish work too. the animals on the left khamssa are neu for me , i know from essaouira the famous dove and salamnder
This is a coincidence to me. I recently saw a series of very unusual hamsas from Joe Samar. They too had unusual images - - one a snake and the other two Yemeni daggers facing a fibula. I also saw a parrot motif recently where I didn't expect one, in a traditional emboidery from Iran. of course all of this is unrelated, but just kind of fits in here.
my feeling is that neither one is genuine old stuff!!!
the one with parrakeets and gazelle is too realistic and even if carvings are well done, one can not be tricked by the bale construction....
The smaller one, i had seen many since a couple of years ago, and was astonished to find a necklace on sale with tens of them, which is very weird....My gut feeling is that this khmasa is new as well but was mechanically or chemically aged
Thanks for casting your expert eye on my recent purchases Ayis. I have to admit I'm a little disappointed that the larger khamsa is not old, mainly because it was a bit expensive, but then again I do like the animal images and it is a very wearable piece. Ah well, you live, you learn...
If the patina is faked it exceptionally well done. I appreciate the feedback from everyone, I shall be more focused on the khamsas and symbolism from now .
Drop me a line Preethi, if you decide to swap them for another piece... I know there were several you liked . S x
Hi Sarah, no worries. The seller may have been misled as well....Perhaps you could mention it to him just for him to be aware?
I already have ....x
and you are spot on, bought as old, and very sorry if it is not.
The offer to exchange was given instantly ...bear it in mind for the future
