Charlotte, this is intriguing. I'm so glad that Lynn found out how it was used. Did you find it here in the UK?

Dear Thelma, I purchased it from an American seller and I was curious about its history too. She told me that it was a gift to her mother and it had been purchased in Israel. That is all she knew. If only it could speak I am sure that it would have a wonderful story to tell.
I am so pleased that Lynn shared her knowledge.
