Nice old necklace, the hirz reminds me of some Ethiopian that I have seen. Perhaps the end beads that are squeezed really result from sleeping on them..?
I like these old things, too, Eva - not super special but just well worn and genuine.
Yes, lets hope it was sleeping on them that caused the end beads to squash!
I don`t know a whole lot about its` history. Just that it was bought from Bedouin in Riyadh in the 80s. But of course it was old already then.
Those beads are gorgeous!
Great endorsement from you, Toyah. I always love Yemen cage beads. And always like battered silver.
The black and white bead fascinates me. I`ve sort of included it with the banded agate but actually I don`t think it is. It`s made as a cornerless bead and is lighter in weight, warmer and has a slightly crackled surface. It`s not glass or plastic. Without the white I might have thought it was jet.
I`m sure someone would know.
These look very old, Frankie. And it's no wonder they're looking a bit squashed: being packed into bags with heavy objects, loaded onto the camels, unloaded from the camels, constantly on the move! I love those beads decorated with circles. Do you know where they are from?
I do feel that they`re pretty old, Thelma. They`re certainly well tarnished. I like to think they`ve journeyed far and with varied transport modes - much further than the journey from Wales that they`ve just made with Royal Mail!
Somewhere in the back of my mind I know I`ve see the circle decorated beads before but just can`t think where right now.
The two pale agates / chalcedony beads look like early versions from India, traded along the silk routes during the 1800's.
the black one could be something from a similar route.
Difficult,to tell even in person! But yes an exciting looking bead x
