Women's belt. Late-Ottoman, ca. 1900.

Women's belt. Probably from Istanbul, late-Ottoman, ca. 1900. Silver, with traces of gilding. The belt has three keyhole-like holes, to adjust the length of the belt; at a certain time, it was obviously worn by a very slender girl or woman, and a fourth (very basic) opening had to be pierced. Purchased in Istanbul in 1996. (Inv.n° müç002 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).

  • Dear jean-Marie. This is a beautiful belt! The keyhole-like holes are common on such belts. Unfortunately the dangles on the buckle are missing, which is quite often the case with these belts, as this part is the most vulnerable and fragile piece. Anyhow, a magnificently carved belt - I love it! With kind regards. Peter

  • Thank you, Peter, for pointing out the missing dangles.  Indeed, the buckle has three eyelets (invisible on the picture) for dangles.  We'll have a search in our box of spare parts; if we are lucky, we'll find fitting material to 'restore' the belt.   If we manage, I will post a picture of it in the comments.  Best greetings, JM.
