Beautiful! Love the pink pearls (coral) as well as the silver pearls. I wondered why Sri Lanka's treasures are here almost non-existant, a country full of precious stones. It is an eldorado for precious stones lovers.......!
Have not seen one of these in a very long time. Very rare to find this. Almost non existent material on the marekt. I have some place one necklace ( if I have not sold it) from Shri Lanka. Very hard to find some types of pieces, only published.
Preethi, I`ve been puzzled about the origin of a necklace of parcel gilt silver beads with quite a fancy large worked silver clasp that I recently bought. I think you have provided me with the answer here because the beads are the same shape as the beads round the top and sides of your necklace here. Do you know if the shape is indigenous to Sri Lanka? They certainly look as though they could be. I think the clasp of my necklace makes sense in that context too.
The previous owner thought my necklace might be from Afghanistan or Indonesia - I thought not Afghanistan but I know very little of Indonesian jewellery so couldn`t be sure. Surely the styles of both areas are very different anyway? I had thought it might possibly be Thai.
I think this necklace is a real "knock-out" in the best sense. Such a fortuitous stumble upon for me. I was actually looking through the site`s coral. And what wonderful coral beads these are! Quite show-stopping!
Thanks so much!
Thank you Frankie. I have a soft spot for Sri Lankan jewellery, but they seem to be hard to find. I'd love to see the beads you purchased!
Preethi, I was cleaning the referred to beads a little as your message arrived! I like to see some age on things but not when the tarnish obliterates all pattern. I`ll show them soon.
Do you know any useful literature on old Sinhalese jewellery? I`d love to learn more.
Preethi, I have just bought a Kandy Sri Lankan silver and coral necklace from the same seller as you bought this one from, I believe. I`m thinking of using the components of it and the Sri Lankan silver bead necklace I posted recently to make a necklace again in the same style but with greater variation of silver beads.
Do you think it would be an ethnic jewellery "crime" to do that?
I could get addicted to this type of necklace!
Hi Frankie, I've seen images of the other necklace that the seller had and it's lovely. These are beautiful necklaces, and a reference site for such pieces shows them as being longer. See http://www.karuncollection.com/?p=1454. Perhaps adding more beads to this necklace would not make it much different from the original configuration.
Preethi, yes, they are all gorgeous. Thanks for the link. I remember now that I had it in my bookmarks but had forgotten it!
To be honest, if I had had a choice of the two, I would have chosen yours - I love the silver gilt that shows. However, I am very happy to have found one at all. Maybe I will play with my two necklaces, after all it wouldn`t be irreversible.
Is the color of the coral so baby pink or more coral color? Am curious. I have only seen these published in one book ,, I think once. not alot of references around.
I think Preethi will confirm that the colour is quite baby pink. A type of angel skin coral is used for these.
