  • Interesting that these go as prayer beads... I have a necklace like this too, recent production, from Mali, perhaps they are also prayer beads, I never thought about it.
  • These are sold in Morocco a lot, recently made I had presumed in Mauritania, but I guess they could be from elsewhere...would be good to find out if they are produced in Mali.

  • The ones I have (which look like these ones on the picture here)  are definitely made in Mali, not imported into Mali, but produced in an atelier in Segou. However, some of the old ones with the intricate metal patterns are imported into Mali from Mauritania.In Timbuktu, the ones with the intricate patterns are used, at least among the Mauritanian people (I lived with them during my intensive desert trekking and in Timbuktu, therefore, I have seen these old prayer beads there being in use still today).
