Please ID - Peter & Jean-Marie!

This is an Ottoman Christian reliquary locket, probably from Iraq or Syria or another province with a Christian population?? The reliquary is double-sided (see photos in the comments), the front side containing a bit of silken embroidery of a haloed figure. The back is engraved with a stylized star. Please ID if you can.

  • Dear Lynn; This is a very beautiful piece and reminds me of one of my Christian necklaces from Iraqi Kurdistan. With kind regards. Peter
  • Very beautiful. I love the embroidered panel, so delicately done. Does the locket open?

  • Hello Lynn, I think Chaldean/Assyrian Christian, from southeastern Anatolia or Iraqi Kurdistan.  With kind regards, JM.

  • Thank you everyone! Thelma, it doesn't open with a hinge but if necessary can be taken apart by peeling back a thin edge of silver (only for repairs.) I opened it only so that a repair could be done with soldering and then put everything back as it was.

  • Beautiful, Lynn! Congratulations.
