Belt - Vratza-Bulgaria

This is an extremely old belt buckle - 18th till mid 19th Century. The buckle is made of bronze, enamel, multicolored glaced clay. Cast imitation of enamel forming cells. While I have seen the longer and shorter plain versions of this buckle, this is the first time, that I came across a buckle with such an elaborate front decoration. The belt is very old as well and very worn. It features a leather backing with gold lace, most probably originating from the Ihtiman district.

  • Incredible buckle in outstanding condition.  I love the coloring of the clay/enamel.  Congratulations!

  • Dear Peter, this is exceptional. Beautiful colours. You must be back at home!

  • Dear Lynn and Thelma; Many thanks for your comments. Yes, I am on vacation back home, cleaning and polishing... I am currently fighting with a copper helmet ... and I do not even have a clue where it could be originating from... all I know is that it is Islamic ... and hard to clean! I will post photos soon! Regards. Peter
