I presume, this was worn by men as an amulet (If it was Anatolian, it would surely be). In the case of amulet-boxes, the amulets are specific formulas written down by Islamic scholars on little pieces of paper, which are placed inside the box and are supposed to protect the wearer from harm and bad luck.
