Arab/Orientalist. Possibly Algeria or Libya. There are still a lot around on Ebay with great filigree work and "ornamental" Arabic letters.
Sharleen
No, its beautiful .Great work. There was a famous jewelery school in Libya in the time of the Italians and they were manufacturing similar bracelets , their style combining Europeans/Italian trends and Arab ones. Europeans jewelers were also making them in Algiers.
This is a beautiful and well crafted cuff. From my little knowledge about the Libyan traditional silver, I do not think this is Libyan. Not from style point of view and also the the fact that most Libyan silver 'cuffs' is 900 rather than 800 . To be sure however, it will be nice to see any hallmarks on the inside surface if any is there. From the style of the Arabic letters 'which are hard to make out the full meaning or the name - as it seems that there is a mix between the filigree and solid letters', the style is more likely from NW Africa ' Algeria?' Morocco ? . Congratulations for the real beauty.
If this is a product of the Italian school crafts which was in Libya during the Italian time in Libya ' as Chantal has guessed' , then this would be a VERY rare item indeed.
Sharleen , Mustapha may be able to tell us whether there is any meaning to the letters but bear in mind that there are often ornamental "looking like an Arabic script" but without any particular meaning.
Very interesting. Thanks Mustafa.
