  • Peter, you have the most wonderful collection of southern Yemeni jewelry!  This necklace is wonderful.

I have noticed that the southern Yemeni jewelry is not as well represented in collections as jewelry from North Yemen.  Do you have any idea why?  I have wondered if there is less of it around, if it less interesting to collectors, or it was because it did not disperse out of Yemen with the Jewish diaspora.

  • Interesting question Lynn. One reason maybe that the country was divided until 1990 and the socialist regime in the South might have been less open to western travellers, diplomats, traders etc. as was the case in many other countries with a similar history. But I know woefully little about Yemeni history, maybe someone else can enlighten us better :-)

  • OH - and yes, this is a wonderful piece, Peter, very similar to some Omani necklaces. I like it a lot!

  •  Peter, I Love this ,like Betty wrote it is getting to jewelry of Oman with its solid make, no skimping on the silver, the real thing. Gr. Ingrid.
