Late-Ottoman gerdanlık / kirdan – NW Anatolia (Turkey).

Traditional ‘gerdanlık’ (tight-fitting necklace) from NW Anatolia. Ca. late 19th century. Copper (with traces of silver gilt), red glass paste, blue/red/black glass beads (+ a few plastic ones). Width: 23 cm; height: 8 cm. Purchased in Bursa. These necklaces-with-beads are the poor-people-version of the much richer necklaces (with only silver, and originating from wealthier households) that can be seen in museums. (Inv.n° müç036 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).

Beautiful. I really like the common jewelry as there was a lot of heart put into them. They simply belong to any collection and not only the fancy pieces. If I ever produce a book with my jewelry, such jewelry will certainly also be included, being a part of the heritage of any country. Thanks for posting this nice necklace. With kind regards. Peter
