Where is this from? Scandinavia?
Linda will tell us for sure but I would say it is a traditional hat of the village of Montehermoso in the province of Caceres in the region of Extremadura in Spain.
I purchased this because I liked it as an object. I'm not sure where it's from but was told it was Polish.
I have non of my books with me to find it. I think Jose Pery may know exactly where it is from yet i would have never thought of Spain for it. Interesting!
I suppose that the braided straw reminded me of Swedish craft work from wheat. It has a European feel for sure.
I am now almost sure about the previous attribution. Linda's is a nice example of the traditional hat of Montehermoso. It seems that there are differences depending on whether the wearer is a maiden, a widow or a married woman. I am attaching some old pictures in black and white made by a famous Spanish photographer, Ortiz Echagüe, that in the 1930's made very nice pictures of Spanish folk. The two ones in color are from the website Lanza. I am sorry but I do not know how to make them bigger...
