Happy Girl's Day

Girl's Day is celebrated in Japan every March 3rd. Families set up displays of dolls, including dolls representing the Emperor and his court. Special sweetened rice cakes are served, including a few presented to the dolls as offerings. The tradition has roots in antiquity. These "Hina" dolls representing the royal couple are made by hand with real silks and gold leaf.

  • Traditional belief in Japan is that the presentation of the dolls each year ensures good luck, and that female children will find a husband.  Girl's Day is meant to remind girls to aspire to have a good character.  The dolls are quickly packed away after the holiday since allowing them to linger on display would be unlucky.
