Close up -Tuareg( ? )Pendant

This is the front of the pendant. We would very much like to know what this says? Do you know or do you know someone who might be able to read it? Thanks, Annie B 5.5 x 3.5 inches 14.5 x 9 cm NFS

  • Hi Annie, This looks like Amharic (a language of Ethiopia).
  • Ahhh.. so not Tuareg.  It does remind me a little of script I have seen on old silver Ethiopian rings. Do you think that this the same language that is used to write the prayers in Ethiopian kitabs?  I understand that Amharic is the second most spoken Semitic language in the world, after Arabic ( per Wikipedia).

    Thanks Hillary!

  • It probably is.  This is definitely not the Tuareg "tifinagh" script.  Amharic is a very ancient language that many people confuse with Aramaic, another Semitic language common around 2000 BC, believed to be that language that Jesus would have spoken.  Aramaic is still in use too, though more for liturgical use if I remember my linguistic anthropology course correctly!
