CIMG0834 Antique Harrar baskets.

Here a collection of two (left on photo) sweet baskets, this is to be made by a sister-in-law and to be brought to the house of the newly weds full of candy. The two on the right are covers for food plates when brought in from the kitchen to the dining room or to a festivity. When idle they are hung on the wall the phallus shaped one over the flat one. (This is traditional) So also the small one in the middle just wall decoration (it is to go with a small flat one). Harrar houses are famous for this their rooms are with carpets on the floors and pillows. (no chairs) In the traditional homes there often is also a podium on which people sit covered in carpets and pillows. Always with lots of these baskets on the wall and standing in niches (holes) in corresponding numbers each side of the room. Very colorful and cozy. Ethiopia itself does not show much in strong colors. Harrar and especially the Adderre ladies are very colorfully dresses. Beautiful velvet tight(almost like leggings) trousers, often in black or dark green with an embroidered border over that a heavy silk knee length gown ,black, green or dark purple (extra thick underskirts are added ) in order to enhance their buttocks and over all of this a voile shawl in all kind of colours. Plus than their jewellery. One of their famous pieces, listen to this Frankie a very long chain up till their knees of amber beads (egg shaped, graduating) ending with a lovely large silk tassle. Very very stunning and colorful.
