Kabardino-Balkar Republic or Dagestan?
Kabardino Balkar is more likely as well could even be some in Georgia and Turkey . In most of my books they are in Russian and have been identified as Russian provinces and not as specific completely . i always thought they were living in Dagestan but the province they are most known for is KIabardino Balkar republic. The defined areas or geography are hard to understand and are not clear always so i am glad you are understandng that
they are a bit similar?
yes both are very beautiful examples. Do you own these? I love the gilt one , unusual to see the set stones. i used to see allot of these about 15 or more years ago in London with dealers there. A rush of Caucasian stuff came into the market place .. Then these items were hard to sell and I had only started buying some items for myself, not for clients . We saw so little of it here in states. Another style of belt was very common and was here in states for years but not much more than that . Then one year I saw one of the breastplates you showed and knew it was Caucasian but didn't know from where. This was before all the on line info was available. So i became interested but purchased only for myself. Then I got that ring I posted in the UK and slowly when i saw things in Paris or London , I brought them back to sell for clients..Then I purchased books and started seeing them , but not reading Russian i could only see photos. Then a few years ago on this site one of our users had himself a large collection and have now become more familiar with these items and when I see them seek them out if i can find clients for them because i find them very interesting and beautiful , very ancient looking.
