  • When ever I see photographs of this type of necklace there always seem to be holes in the front of the silver boxes. Does anyone know the reason for this?

  • hi toya. is just for one raison.if there is no hole when they are adding the last piece to close it, it will be explose because of the gaz and heating inside.the holes are there to let the gaz out

  • I would love to get this catalog.

My understanding is that this jewelry when it was worn as a necklace, was very widely distributed across Algeria from South Aures mountains towards Saoura Valley and even Up to the Hoggar passing by the Mzab and oued Souf.....It was then called GLADA

It was used as a fibula link only in Ouargla, El golea and the Mzab where it was called ZINAT SSIAGHA!

Where in Algeria you make your best jewelry purchases?

I know of Many Moroccan dealers that bring out very interesting old jewelry to Marrakech from Algeria especially from Saouara and Hoggar

I would also like to know if you know more about these fibulas, all i know is that they come from somewhere around south west algeria (saoura valley??) and that in Morocco we have similar ones but enmaled called "tizerzai n tawoukka" or "worm holes fibulas" " fibules du ver", Maybe you have more info about them? In your catalog?

  • hi ayis.in this catalog hre is just a few pices of jewelry.i ll bring you one next time. yes, there is lot of moroccan dealers buying jewelry and sell in marrakech and essouira mostly

they buy a lot touareg and kabyl items. saoura is not more like before

thid necklace was distributed as you say i all middel and south algeria, with febula, i ouergla, laghouat, tougourt, elgolea, adrar and ainsalah.specialy in weddings to keep atraditionel clothes. there is another raison too why it s expandet. it is in the same time considerated as a talisman, protektion and luck bringimg.

the 3 square are for richness and money they are 3 not as the rest 2 each. the 2 triangel a sharp to perforate the ennemi or who wants to do bad. the 2 cylinder have a soft and friendly form, they are own protection. the 2 leaves are almost the time hidden, if they are made from jewish silversmith, they wil be written in hebrew. from islamic silversmith, it will be just flowers or geometric signes.

to buy jewelry, it is better to go to kabylie for kabyl items and algolea, ainsalah, tamanrasset ( now not good because of lybia and north mali and niger problems )

  • saoura is a verry big region near south marocco. it was a time when people were traveling and dealing together. the lokal culture is the same. even south marocco population ( the half nomads ) were traveling and living in saoura region as in south marocco. the old caravane routes and the famous caravanes, departing from marrakech to gao, mopti, timbouktou, djenné were all passing through saoura.until now, people have relatifs and family members in both sides and trade together.

ofcorse all this keeps the culture aspekts and mix them. the same fibula i have not seen in the region but verry semilar there is.old not new, the new ones a re bit different
