Very fine silver cuff from Yemen

A remarkably fine silver cuff, with superb granulated surface decoration, from Yemen, showing exquisite Jewish craftmanship; 19th c. Purchased in recent years from Linda Pastorino. (The photo is hers.) Truus and Joost Daalder Collection. The finesse of the work is actually best shown this way, with the object on its side, rather than vertically.

  • Attractive granulation . Very much professional craftsmanship. Well done work with lots of fine details put together rather carefully and skillfully. Beautiful piece. Thanks for posting this

  • Absolute top of the shelf  piece of jewelry. Refinement, the best. Linda knows have to choose them, lucky for the now owner Joost. Gr. Ingrid.

  • This is extremely beautiful and unusual.  I will post some examples of  Yemeni work documented by the stamps/marks to be 18th or 19th century from the Walters Museum.  This gorgeous cuff has similar workmanship.

  • Many thanks for comments, Mustafa, Ingrid, and Lynn. And Lynn: a special thank you for those two images. Yes, I am quite prepared to believe it might even be 18th century, though I don't profess to know enough to make that judgement. It certainly does look very early in reality, and while for some years prior to seeing  this we had been offered a fair few good pieces of Yemeni jewellery in addition to the ones we already had, this particular piece really stood out for us. So we didn't hesitate. And we are still very pleased with it. A thing of beauty is a joy for ever, and its loveliness does increase, as Keats claimed. We haven't seen many other pieces from Yemen for sale since we bought this one that we thought were as good.

  • What a beauty, Joost. Lovely work.

  • wonderful!!!!

  • Thanks, Harald and Eva!
