Yi (South-west China) wedding crown

Ceremonial crown for the chief dancer at a wedding, of extremely intricate and refined workmanship, displaying many auspicious motifs. South-west China, Yunnan: Yi people. 19th/20th c. Height: 22 cm. Good quality silver, and a lining made of wool - probably that of the yak. This piece is far superior to what is now still made in the part of the world which it comes from. Indeed, this very piece turns up here and there in various much inferior, far more "mechanical" forms. Shown in *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*, p. 272. That book's section on South West Chinese Minorities has been greatly praised by many, including Robert K. Liu. It features many pieces not seen elsewhere.
