Yemeni Earrings by Ali Muttahar

While these appear antique, they are actually expertly crafted replicas. I purchased them from Kamal Rubaih at "World Friend" in Sanaa. Kamal owned the originals, and commissioned this copy from a young silver smith named Ali Muttahar. You can read more about current Yemeni silversmiths in the Jan/Feb 2012 on-line edition of "Saudi Aramco World."

  • Yes!  I just received my copy yesterday, a wonderful magazine all around, and free!  I have an extra should someone want it.

  • Wow, from the pictures it is hard to believe that these are copies, very well crafted. Brilliant filgree along with a beautiful patina

Though it is very comforting to know that there still skillfull smiths in yemen able to do such amazing work

  • Yes, I was very impressed by the competence of the work, and very pleased to patronize (indirectly via Kamal's shop) this talented young silver smith.  But still, there are only a handful of good silversmiths currently practicing their trade in Yemen.  And as Marjorie's article points out, the craft of silver working is still endangered in Yemen.  Wherever I travel, if I find good silver work still being done in the traditional manner, I like to patronize a living silversmith.  What better way to preserve a tradition?  And someday, this piece will also become an antique.

  • Very clever idea and gifted work.  I hope it will help the economy of Yemen.

  • View the video on the internet of Ali Muttahar at work! See my blog post for the link.
He uses this idea of shape also for a pendant on a chain.
