lovely Piece, Betty, but I cannot help..........
I've done a bit more research in the meantime (not to much avail) and also consulted with a very knowledgable friend who is also doubtful about whether this bracelet is from Yemen. I've seen two or three other pieces like this before and in neither case the owner/seller was very clear about the origin.
Can anyone help?
Absolutely stunning piece.
I second your doubtful thoughts about the exact origin.
The round applique hiding the hinge is one of the most common feature on yemeni bracelet, especially for the filgreed ones.
But the overall feel seems to point to a much more northerly origin, namely as you suggested from the levant or turkey
Also the framing silver ribbon on each side is something more close to the mediterranean, it has even a slight north african taste to it.
Can you upload a pisture of the inside of the bracelet?
nice piece, even if it looks yemen, i agree with the ottoman idea and confirm northafrica. if you look good at it, you will see some enamelig traces
Thank you very much Aala and Ait. I've checked for enamel traces, but my untrained eye is playing tricks on me. In some places there might be a tiny rest of green, but overall it looks only like some kind of greyish residue in the "petals" of the flowers. I see some resemblance to enamelled North African pieces though...
Here's a picture of the inside:
Ok, now the hinge system is very ottoman, we can almost rule out Yemen as a possibility!
Below I am posting two more bracelets (not mine) of this type. Neither is enamelled. One (white background) was bigger than mine and appears to have different hinge system: the other one is the same size as mine with what looks like the original chain attached. Sorry for pestering everyone with this quest :-)
