Two ‘bel bağı’ (waistband) from the Alevi Türkmen village of Nebiköy (near Tokat). Beadwork, purchased (in the village) in 1989. The upper one is incomplete: a ‘bel bağı’ should have 12 tassels, symbolizing the Alevi belief in the 12th imam, an ultimate savior of humankind who will emerge with Isa (Jesus Christ) and fulfill their mission of bringing peace and justice to the world.
