'Tokalı kemer' (woman's belt with buckles). From NW Anatolia, late-Ottoman, ca. 1900. The red silk belt (L.85 cm,W.68 mm; lined with jute) is adorned with copper sequins & small spiral copper thread. The silver buckles (Ø: 83 mm, traces of gilding) have an embossed decor, featuring a large dish on stand with (possibly) sugar cones. If so, the belt was intended for the henna night (women's gathering, the evening before the wedding). (Inv.n° müç198 - Kavak Costume Collection, Antwerpen/Belgium).
