Wedding Hat with Shoulder "Echarpe" - Bulgaria

The hat together with the shoulder decoration is a set from the mid 19th Century. The Tepelak on the right side is a separate unit, not belonging to the set. However, it gives a good impression of the "hair" fastened at the back of the hat. The center front coin is solid 22 karat gold. This is an extremely rare set in a very condition.

  •  This is really wonderful.  Did you buy this in Bulgaria?   Are these things available and or not available for what ever the price?  just curious as i have a client that collects headdresses and outfits etc. Would love to be able to find these but i would expect you're going there so it's allot easier .

  • Dear Linda; Many thanks for your message. Yes, I bought these items directly in Bulgaria. They are not readily available, at least not in this wonderful condition, but can be purchased only from collectors, who are in need of money (aren't we all...). However, if I come across a similar unit I will definitely let you know. The chances to get such beautiful items out of Bulgaria are still very good, even though they now realize that their items have a much greater value than they have originally thought and sold their items for. With kind regards. Peter

  • 2506040179?profile=originalDear Peter,

Because the hat looked somewhat familiar to me, I mailed the picture to a Bulgarian friend of mine, who is a specialist on Muslim clothing and culture in Bulgaria (both Pomak and Turks), with the request to identify if possible the items.  I quote from her answer: “As for this hat – It is very beautiful and original.  And yes, you are right... It is Pomak, from the Rhodopes: Banite region. Only they use this type of hat”.    She sent me also a picture of the contemporary traditional costume of that region, which I add to this message.  The type of hat matches yours, indeed (in a much 'poorer' way, what is to be expected).

    With kind regards, JM.
