Another golbaqa amulet

A late nineteenth/early twentieth century Tekke amulet, cut from 2 pieces of silver precisely soldered together ...decorated with a number of shapes and symbols, many of them representing water ... studded with 13 cats-eye carnelians probably representing the phases of the moon. A fertility amulet. 11.3 x 7.2 cms.

    The back of the amulet is interesting. The silver used is taken from a plate previously engraved with flowers, quite unlike Turkomen jewellery. Maybe a spare piece of silver the jeweller had found, an offcut from another jewel.

    Thanks Betty. It was found in Afghanistan but probably came originally from Turkestan.
