Tunisian Souar

This cuff bracelet comes from southern Tunisia, and is alternately referred to as either "hadida" or "souar". It may have been made in Djerba, but was probably used in the Ghormassen area. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find old pieces with finely done chisel work. Similar bracelets were also made in Tripoli.

  • I think this motif has been used for quite a while, but since it is more intricate, I think one only sees it on better pieces.  It is similar to the design one sees here in carpets and tile work.  I've seen similar in a book I have on Libyan jewelry, so I think it is typical of southern Tunisia designs.
