  • Lovely and very nice photos!
  • thanks for showing also the sweet child wearing one.  It is always best to also see how it is worn!

I had one of These Soul lockets (probably smaller than yours), but gave it to my daughter.

  • Very charming photos.  so good to see how traditional pieces are worn and by who.

  • Would this be a boy or a girl?  In my eyes it looks as they hang protective ornaments on the children and beautify them at the same time.

In Ethiopia, they mostly tried to make the young boy-child look ugly, by p.e. shaving off the hair on one side, or growing one long hair lock with a cowry shell attached to it (protecive power) and of course a leather pouch with some protective herbs of small prayer in it. (ketab).

This mostly done to good looking young boys to make them unattractive to be taken into death, often when previously boys have died in that family.  They sometime go so far as to cut of a bit of the upper part of the ear, to deform him a bit.  All for the love of the child to protect him against the evil eye.

So good to see they protect in this part of the world their children with strong amulets. (also adults I have seen on some pictures are wearing this.  I love also the colorful head dress to they also have protective powers?

  • Very child, love seeing how the amulet is worn.  The little guy looks well-loved.

  • hi  ingrid i  think is  a  girl, hmong  people  like   the   children   become  real   pretty.and   will put  a  lot  of   silver  and   nice   jewelry  on them.the  lock   means   can lock   ur    spirt.so  ghost  cant   kill  u.

  • HI,Eva,mine is  about    10cm   long.is  good   for  children  . i wear it  everyday  when  i  was  a  little  baby

  • Thank you Son for your reply.  Making the children look pretty the people in that region must believe strongly in the protective power of the amulets.  Something to hold on to. Actually 10 cm looks to me very big for little child.(like yours) Gr. Ingrid.

  • Quite surprising really that type of chain are also made in Yemen and Ethiopia.  A good sign to realize that trade must have reached also as far apart from China into Africa.

  • yes  Ingrid u  can see   some  silmar   silver  work around the  world  it's  intersting
