  • Another bracelet that comes from Gujarat rather than Madya Pradesh, see "A World of Bracelets", p. 188, top right. They are a frequent - though none the less an attractive - type. Usually made of good silver.

  • Gopal, do you BUY in Madya Pradesh? That is fine, of course, but don't conclude from that, if that is where you do buy, that your pieces inevitably come from that area as well. There is nothing wrong with the pieces I have been looking at, but so far only one is from Madya Pradesh. Not that this is a major issue - but it is better to get the place of origin right. Do you have books to guide you??

  • Although your descriptions are at times wrong, as in this case, I think that the pieces which you post are of a high standard, Gopal. I am surprised that you don't get more reactions, for you are showing a very good range of fine Indian jewellery.

  • You are right Joost, Gujarat. I am not entirely sure but are this not Anklets? The inner diameter being in my pair a little over 6cm, the same size as the very heavy, big smooth anklets from Gujarat. Some anklets are even smaller at the inside.

  • Harald, it's great to have you with me in looking at these pieces, which so many of our fellow viewers have not seen or not felt inclined to comment on, even though Gopal's jewellery certainly deserves more attention! I am glad you confirm the attribution to Gujarat but find it much harder to decide, as often, on the function. The book I was looking at ("A World of Bracelets*) described these (p. 188) as "bracelets", but I would agree with you that, particularly in this instance, there would be good grounds for thinking that they may well be anklets, and I would feel that to be in tune with both their size, emphatic ornamentation, and the opening at the back. It is often hard to be definite on this distinction, but I had too readily taken for granted what *W World of ...* suggested. Good to see your comment!
