  • very unique and great!

  • this one is typical for the regin tamanrasset. in the touareg culture, it will sound funny for someones, sandals have a good place.

i searched why it is like this and asked people almost all answered : they carry you throw the life

if we good observe,we find the sandales form in many jewelry and specialy leather work like bags, belts,portmonnaies......

  • Regarding the significance of sandals in culture - there is a huge statue of the sandals that carried the Eritrean rebels through the Ethiopian-Eritrean war in Asmara.  I gather it is a testament to their willingness to struggle and fight, even while wearing only tire-rubber sandals.  I'm not sure if anyone has ever made them into jewelry, though!

  • thank you juliana for the info. i know that in tchad and north soudan and all sahara and sahel regions, the sandal symbol has a place in the culture. this story about eritrean rebels is new for me.

i know that this kind of jewelry in south algeria ( hoggar ) was made many years ago and then dissepear. i m working together with some smith in hogaar and we are trying to revive the old design

i have 2 of them juliana. i make you first some more pictures and then you will tel me

  • I  had seen a sandal made as touareg pendant in silver on Ebay. It was really really wonderful. Unfortunately I did not get it, because I was not at home when the auction finished. They explained it was the sandal of the Prophet and had the meaning of protection. It was the only time I had seen it like that, and I am still regretting that I failed the bidding...........

  • eva. if you have a photo. i will make you the same if you want, maybe even better :-)

  • sorry, I have no photo............ and it is about 8-10 months ago.........

  • maybe draw it ??? you are good artist.

if you draw just the form, the rest i do it for you. ofcorse only if you really want to have it

  • I believe that the Tuareg use of the sandal refers to the sandals of the Prophet Mohamed.  It is often used as a design in Islamic art, though highly stylized
