@Harald - No, I didn't know but it makes sense as the chain is quite long. Actually I have another one (I will make a better picture and have it re-posted) whihc definitely was used that way as the chain is extremely long.
Some come with small bells on the sides.

this necklace was most likely made by Yemeni Jewish silversmiths who lived on the top of a mountain in the remote settlement of Ruqab, Bur'a Yemen. The residents of Bur'a and nearby Rayma wore tayyars like this over one shoulder and resting on a hip, like a bandelier.
