Silver Mamouli from Sumba

The Mamouli fertility talismans from Sumba have fascinated me for decades. They represent the female and also the male, in a particularly symbiotic way. Somewhat surprisingly, they are worn by men, dangling near their ears from their headcloths. Their origin was most likely as earlobe weights.

  • A "mamuli", from West Sumba (Indonesia). An ear ornament in most cases, though sometimes also worn as a pendant. Could be worn by men as well as women.
