Sankoré Mosque of Timbuktu, Painting

This is an oil painting on cloth, made by an artist in Timbuktu. I just got it, from my brother in law in Mali. (Someone travelling to Switzerland took it along for me). It is very beautiful, the photo is not very good, it reflects the shine of the oil colours. I will try to take a better photo... It was such a lovely surprise to get it as a gift from my Malian family this evening. Sorry, I know it is not jewellery, but I was so happy, I had to share it.

@Thank you for your comments. As written, in real it is much nicer than on the photo as it is a) rolled and difficult to keep it flat for a photo and b) the light reflects on the oil colours. I was so surprised last night, as I had not expected any gifts..... and I do love TImbuktu. As this city is now under the claws of some foreign Islamistic groups (Somali, Nigeria, Afghani, and others) and the inhabitants suffer extremely, it has a special value for me. We will hang it up on a wall, and it surely will protect us....

For me it is not only a piece of art, but also some sort of memory, as I used to walk right there,,,,,,,,, several years, several times and visited the Mosque inside. This mosque is just next to the place where a cousin of ours used to live (and where we stayed). The cousin has fled in the meantime, leaving back

most of this belongings. I heard his house is now being used by these foreigners, as if it was their own, with all that he had left back belonging to him.

  • What a surprise and a wonderful gift, Eva. This beautiful painting does revive the memory.
  • @Thank you Akkie. My daughter had an accient with a motorcycle in laos, she had to be operated 10 hours, on her hand to save the fingers....... she is now back in Thailand, where infrastructures (speak hospitals)  are much better. I am totally paralyzed from sorrow. Will not comment anything for a while.

  • good luck for your daughter

This is how it looks being fixed on a stable base. (It is relatively big).

My daughter can fly on Monday from Khon Kaen to Bangkok into another hospital, which was recommended by the sickness insurance, she will be operated once more, but the worst is over. However, Mali........ a big worry!
