A great piece! Is that an original belt?
I always wonder about the abundance of "kavkaz" silver items fron belts to vodka-beakers to cigarette cases. Were these exclusively produced for some a tourist market? Or for export? Most of them are stamped whereas locally made jewellery which was traditionally worn in a particular Caucasus region often wasn't stamped.
I could talk about these topics for hours. Many of the top quality jewelry houses in Moscow st Petersburg even thru locations in Europe employed top niello artists for those high end items including fabrege. In the Caucasus many of these items were a status simple. But they even adorned their horse tack with silvered items.
Where you see kavkaz written on items it was made for gifts.
Very interesting, John. Thanks a lot! And do keep talking for hours... :-) You'll find many listeners here.
