  • These are sometimes called banana pendants, used in Ethiopia and the horn, usually strung with amber. Love these!

  • Very delicate work. Beautiful

  • Beautiful! Like it very much! I see, Patti has some information about its pendants, that I did not know yet. As Ethiopia is a multi-ethnic country, there are many many different ethnies and types of jewellery, very fascinating.

  • Eva, unless I am mistaken, this is a shape/design  that you dont have yet...........back to ebay!

  •  @Chantal: this is certainly expensive. Dont forget I gave money to my daughter and the taxes..... must economize a little. She left again for Laos yesterday.......... and Vietname, and andand.... perhaps she will bring me some pieces....and photos, of which Rami can get annoyed again

  • They are often used in Harar, I have heard, the Moslem city of 99 mosques. There does happen to be one on ebay ( at least there was when I last searched) They come in different sizes, this one looks big, but there are smaller ones too and sometimes they are doubled.

  • @Thank you Patti. I did not know (that these are from Harar). This is the area where the German environmental activist convinced the people to stop female mutilation (Günter Neuberg). They are quite an interesting people, and the pendant or necklace is great! Some day, when my finances are in a better position... but perhaps I cannot refrain from looking a bit.... on ebay!

  • Thank you to all for your comments. Yes, Patricia, this one is quite big. I got it some years ago from Marlene. They are also seen once in a while in Yemen but mostly coming from Ethiopia and other countries in the Horn of Africa. I also saw one recently on Ebay (I cannot remember the seller) that was like the one you describe. A big one from which it hung a smaller one. If I trace it again I will give the details.

  • I have just seen one on Ebay, sorry, I forgot to note the seller. It was 140.00 US Dlrs.  I am not buying it at the moment, have no money, too much spent and given away (family). Perhaps sometime in the future, after some months... if I see it again.

  • Harar is one of my for sure places that I would love to go! A pilgrimage place for many Muslims and the last home of the French poet  Rimbaud. The textiles look amazing and it is know for its basketry ( you can make sure I have all the tourist points down pat!) This pendant also displays the boldness and heaviness that you see in jewelry from the Horn.
