  • This could very well be Ethiopian, from the Harrarque province,I do have a similar one., including the chain links which are sometimes also features on other pendants.  Will try to find the piece and make a photo.

  • Hello Ingrid, would be very interesting to see your pendant. I have no information on this one. It seems to have low silver content. I just assumed it origin based on the reference books I have.

  • The wirework might point to it being Kazakh.

  • I think the original description that you got Cecilia is basically correct. For all I can say (though I cannot claim to be an expert) this type of jewellery belongs to Yemen. When I get some time I will send some likns to similar pieces. However, Ingrid is right to point out that similar pendants or veil weights can also be found in Ethiopia, especially in and around the town of Harrar which has long been an important trading point for the wider region. Whether or not such a piece as yours has been made in Yemen or Ethiopia is hard to tell. For all I know Yemeni jewellery was a) imported into Ethiopia, b) made in Ethiopia by Yemenite silversmith residing there and c) reproduced by Ethiopian silversmith.

As in many other region with cross-cultural influences it is therefore really difficult to pinpoint the exact origin unless the piece is signed by a well-known maker (which was common with the more valuable work in Yemen, but not in Ethiopia I believe).
