Yes Eva this is definitly an old Shewa cross or(Maltese cross) This cross you find also chisseled out in some of the tombs in Axum were some of the Maltese Knights are buried (like in a granite coffin. And quite some legend attached to it.
These crosses are often of good silver getting a beautiful was glow when polished up. One of the point you can confirm if it has been worn and old is: the eye is thicker at the bottom of the whole and thinned out on top as well as worn completely though like in your case. It was (is worn through and they have folded the edges over each other. This cross is very much appreciated by western people who like to wear it as a art object. It is also decorated with the protective eye. Nice additon Eva.
Hi Ingrid, I really forgot that this design is also called Maltese cross! Of course, I had completely forgotten this Name! Also I did not know that Maltese Knights are buried in Axum. Yes, the hook is folded (the edges) over another, as you said. It has a wonderful shine, i have only polished it with a scarf, before putting it on (I like to wear it often!), it is definitely my favourite cross! I also like it's size, not to big, just ok for me.
