  • Congratulations Peter!!  I just love these three necklaces.  The presence of small bells appears to be a major distinguishing feature of Kurdish Iraqi vs. syrian jewelry.  Wow.

  • Very lovely necklace, I've never before seen one of these sporting shells. Beautiful, Peter!

  • I love the way this necklace was crafted Peter. The idea of the two shells , the stones and the  cylindrical amulets all with the small bells.. It is just amazing.

  • The shells and beads take this to a whole new level. Beautiful treasure!

  • Dear All; Many thanks for your comments - much appreciated. I know that bells are used in some cultures to chase away the bad spirits. This is possibly also the case for these necklaces. For sure, every part of these necklaces has a special function or purpose. I have a very interesting book about such amulets and the various connections and purpose of each of them at my home. I will check it the next time I am home. With kind regards and best wishes. Peter

  • As Toya said, the use of shell and blue bead to impersonate an anthropomorphic design brings this very necklace to a whole new level.

very nice and attractive necklaces you have posted Peter, congrats

  • Love the use of the cowrie shells and those blue beads for fending off misfortune. That particular type of bead seems to be used over a very wide area of the Middle East and even further afield in Afghanistan. The idea behind them must be very old.
