This was identified for me as being from the Kalash people in the Chitral region of Pakistan. I believe the identifier is knowledgable, as he is an ethnic jewelry dealer in Pakistan but I'd love to see at least one more example of a similar choker, or at least the silver beads... Does anyone have anything similar?

  • Dear Annie; This piece is stunning - Congratulations! Pakistan has got so many beautiful items. I am currently working with a strong Pakistani workforce here in Saudi Arabia - great people with great capacities. Knowing my weakness for their jewelry, they keep on showing me photos of such items and I understand that there is still plenty of antique jewelry left in Pakistan (Peshawar has also got Afghani pieces). I am especially keen to visit the Swat Valley, having quite a number of pieces from there in my collection. With kind regards. Peter

  • Hi Lynn,  I think I somehow deleted  your comment to me, so I copied and pasted it from my email.  I'm not sure how that happened. sorry.  Here is what  Lynn had to say:  It's a very very beautiful necklace.  There was another comment from Tribal Heritage IDing it was Pashtun, and the only other reference I am aware of is Linda's version of this choker which is IDed as Pashtun:  https://rugrabbit.com/node/136325   I am not aware of a book/museum reference.  There was one on etsy for a bit which was IDed generically as Afghan / Pakistani.

  • So, In reply to Lynn - Thanks for sharing Lynn.  It's great that it is Linda that has one.... figures!  I emailed a friend this morning about this piece and he had quite a bit to say, bottom line being that his best guess was Swat/Kohistan area.  Later this afternoon I saw the post from Tribal Heritage, saying the same thing, so I am feeling more confident now.  I quoted from the email pretty extensively on FB as part of the general discussion. Take a look.  This is a sweet necklace; I tend to fall i love with the humble , folkier pieces such as this.

  • Thank you Peter. Lucky you!
