  • hi Hillary,.

no idea, the peacock is confusing me...........cannot wait for the solution! Carla mentions Mexico.Do they have hands of Fatma in Mexico?   Put us out of our misery!

  • I have no idea, but it is very pretty...is it a hat pin???
  • Peru-shawl pin?
  • Maybe Iran, Persia?
  • could be Iran, as Suzan said... because of the peacock (peacock throne of the Pahlavi dynasty), and the hamza for Islam ? I am really curious about the solution!
  • Some excellent guesses!  This is an antique shawl pin from Guatemala.  The hand/ hamsa motif is also common in Mexican jewelry and is probably a through-back to hamsas from Andalusia, Spain.  Thank you all!
  • That was fun! It's interesting the way Andalusian designs are found in both North Africa and Latin America. My favorite example is of a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco that had beautiful tile work and interior arches and now, with little change, works perfectly as a Moroccan restaurant.
  • I thought it would be fun to place this piece based on motifs.  Glass cabochons are used from the Americas to Europe, Africa, and Asia, especially in reds and greens.
