I recently chanced upon this silver pendant and would be grateful for hints where it might come from. I guess it's from the subcontinent. Maybe it was originally something other than a pendant? It is definitely worn (one of the bails is so thin that it broke). About 6cm/4.5 inches wide.
Can this object be from Indonesia? The 2 rings at the top (=botom) can be added later on? Could it be part of a crown? Just some ideas!
It's all possible, Harald. The only information the seller had was that it is supposed to be early 20th Century...
I also have the feeling that this was perhaps not a pendant to start with... and yes, the rings might have been added later. Indonesian is a thought... Do you happen know where I could find pictures of the crown you have in mind?
@ Harald: just followed your hint and found this wedding crown / hair comb from the Iban people in Indonesia on pinterest:
The shapes and ornaments do look quite similar... maybe someone recycled a broken crown?
Again, thanks a lot for the hint!
A comb, like on the picture, can not have been made in to diferent pendants, much to costly to do so.
But I suppose your item is one of the pendants of a necklace. I had such a necklace, long ago, from Bali. My necklace had 5 pendants that had also a "lining" like yours, they looked like very flat boxes. These were made this way to make the pendants stronger. Often the were also made of gold or gilded silver.
Thanks a lot for your comments, Harald. It sounds like you do not own this necklace any longer. What a shame... I would have loved to see a complete piece.
Betty, I sold the necklace in the past. I did hope to have a photo of it it but sadly enough I do not.
When I see a picture of such a necklace some were I will post it.
