This was sold as an Omani girl's headdress, but it has a lot of Ethiopian characteristics.....

  • Interesting! Lets see what Ingrid or Betty know about it. I just bought an Ethiopian headdress by the Argobba ethnie, which Looks similar  (the round silver pearls), but different. It has some similarities.. I admit, but is not the same (I have not received it  yet). This subject interests me. What is different are the Brown (wool?),( the Argobba use red wool tassles). Pendants, and the decoration of the metal /silver pearls on top. But then there are other ethnical Groups in Ethiopia than the Argobba -so lets see what the experts say.... I was looking for a Picture how this head Ornament was worn (the Ethiopian one) and I found this: (it may help to identify resp. not-identify . You can see some wear an Addition in front of small chains and metal (Aluminium) plates., some wear only the band similar to yours.

  • I add another Picture of an Ethiopian  Argobba woman wearing such a headdress (with the side tassles but without the dangles in front) just to see and compare....... Perhaps they wear yours in Oman, I do not know.......... I just find it very interesting. Possibly the Brown tassles are worn in front as a sort of veil (similar to the woman on my Picture below at the right side). It is a pity I do not have

2506012426?profile=originalmy newest acquisition (it has also dangless made of Aluminium I think), which are worn in front of the face as some sort of veil.

  • Yes Hilari I think it was sold to you correctly as from Oman. Beautiful.  It looks as if it done on leather. The breast image is different than the Ethiopian one. The Ethiopia one has one extended nipple with no decoration around it like yours with a lovely rosette decor.  I do not know about the tassles. I will upload a picture of the ones I have from Ethiopia. In Ethiopia the silver ornaments are strung on three rows of colored Bohemian small glass beads and the back is just a plain robe. Picture follows in 5 min.

    Gr. Ingrid.

  • Ingrid is probably right and your is from the Oman. It is a wonderful item and very beautifully made.

Do you know whether the tassles are worn in front of the face (something like a veil) or in the back?I just wonder because one of  the Argoba Versions of Ethiopia has metal Pendants which are worn in the front (as seen on one of the Pictures in my comment). In any case, it is a rarely seen, most beautiful object!

  • I love this unusual head piece, too, but I have to second Ingrid and Eva. I don't think it is Ethiopian. It shows some similarities with the lovely bracelet Nada posted a while ago: https://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/036?context=user

  • Omani and it's beautiful! I like it a lot
