Great photo, Ishvara. Is it a recent one? I remember seeing people doing this years ago. The woman in the middle has whitened her face. Is this significant? Maybe a funeral?
I also like this Picture. We know very Little here about South African tribes. Is Mfengu a tribe like Xhosa and Zulu? The ladies look great. Thanks for showing. In modern South Africa, are the tribes still living traditionally? How about the San?
Xhosa is more of a language group than a tribe because it doesn t have a king like the Zulus do . The Mfengu speak Xhosa and have their own distinct dress and culture . They live near the Kei River in South Africa . Yes many of these Mfengu still live traditionally in the hills of the Eastern Cape area. The photo is an old post card from the Seventies.
Hi Ishvara, thank you for the Information! Nice to know!
