Marriyah necklace, Oman

This wedding necklace, weighing 315 grams, has as its main feature a special and most likely very old Hirz. Note the wide bail on the hirz, the fine filigree around and the pattern of circles from each of its corners. The Maria Theresa coins have a beautiful patina, as do the beads, with their earlier pointed bosses now worn smooth.I believe this necklace is from the Jebel Akhdar region, and would appreciate your thoughts on it. Any additional information on the hirz would also be very welcome.

    Dear Preethi; This is a rather old necklace. You are right, the Hirz is unusual, especially the top loop! I have never seen it that long, spanning the entire width of the Hirz. Of course, the coral fingers are adding value to the necklace. I remember that there is a similar Hirz pictured in the book (disappearing silver jewelry ...), I have mentioned to you earlier. I do not have a copy here in Saudi Arabia available but if you have the book, you will be able to find it easily. Congratulations on this beauty Preethi. Very well selected indeed! Peter

    Just came across this fabulous necklace again, Preethi, and thought that the hirz reminds me of bracelets worn by the Rashaida and other groups in Eritrea and Ethiopia. There is actually a clan of the Tigre speaking people in Eritrea who are also called Mariah (spellings vary...). In Ethiopia ,in the very old days, you would also find amulets with similar long tubes instead of bails. Just wanted to share my thoughts....
