  • Very nice and special!

  • thanks marie-ange. i got a camera today and made photos of the chains

  • This is a very unusual bracelet, one that is not seen very often at all. Is this Kabyle? Which part of ALgeria is it from?

  • they are from Tiziouzou, wich is a big area.exactly the place is difficult to say.even in algeria they are rare. we call them SELK  bracelets. selk is a long line of metal, what is hier made of silver

  • Since you are from Algeria, maybe you could answer a question for us. We have been discussing the differences between Kabyle jewelry made in ALgeria and jewelry made in the style of Kabyle from Tiznit. Are you familiar with the Tiznit Kabyle style jewelry? Does true Kabyle jewelry differ much from it?

  • great question Patti!

    :-)

  • I am going to add a link to some tiznit bracelets made in Kabyle style-- just so you have a reference.     https://ethnicjewels.ning.com/photo/margoulcat22

  • in all north afrika the kabyle style was not the same in the begining.since around 1000 jears ago, started with the expansion of islam countrys artists and arts a new introduction of another technics and samples.then came almost in the same time the enamel technic from iran and took the hand over. the artists changed the way they make jewelry and added also a new styles. chawia and mzab almost not. they kept doing their own jewelry with verry few changing.the geographik and nature of the lands have influence too. mzab live in beginning of sahara ( no coral) they give more importance for the material itself ( the weight ) enamal was not used. chawia live in hard landscape, verry cold in winter, verry hot in sommer, far from the coast. the material weight was important for them too. we have also another important point.the jewish culture and art had and still have a place in north africa jewelry.not only, from jemen until mauritania, we find many semilar styles and graphics.

the kabyles in algeria, tunisia , morocco had almost always the same 4 colors in the jewelry. blu for the mediterrannee, green for landscape and symbol for earth fertilty, red ( coral) and yellow for the oldest Numidia flag.

i see not a big difference between kabyle jewelry from algeria and morocco.the few pieces that make a difference are pieces made in the kabyle border area, south is more tendence to moorish jewelry and tuareg jewelry.

i think i wrote enough and i could help you

  • Thanks, that is very informative. Gives me a lot of ideas to research.

  • there is other aspekts too. it is difficult to differencie old jewelry from morocco and algeria.i had many kabyle pieces from morocco that are 100 % semilar to the ones in algeria, and they are old not buyed or sold from place to place. realy each one separatly made in a small kabyle village. the new jewelry has taken many other influences. jewelry books, people are more traveling, internet, orders from retailer following the trend..... makes things getting different and this phenomen is everywhere and in every thing
