This bazuband is so decorative, not like the very plain one in my collection. Look at all the open work in that thick silver. I have peeked into the piercings in my own bazuband, but cannot figure out how they do this. They do appear to be made in layers. Am I wrong?
Anna this one is not made of silver the other two once are!!!
Bit I wish it was thick silver!! But I still like you say the open work is quite amazing!!
It is made of brass! And it does not look that it is made in layers!!!
This band has been cast and might be engraved later on. It is a bit hard to see if the text is engraved or has been engraved in the wax model before casting, which can be done.
It might look like layers because (when the to be casted form was made in wax) they used a knife like instrument to cut away the wax. You sometime see the same effect in cast silver fibula from Marrocco or Algeria.
Fascinating. Thank you, Harald. It had the shape and heft of cast metal, but I could see what appeared to be layers. Now I understand that there is a better explanation. Thanks again.
What I meant by *shape* is that central panel of my bazuband has a very slight insinuation of being a convex or bowed piece of metal. Maybe it is my old eyes ;)
I think you see it right. May be it is bent a bit to make a little better fit to the arm?
A very interesting piece. Thanks for posting.
