  • How interesting, John. Looks like a Caucasian "military" belt full trappings. Is that some Gaziri next to the bottle?

  • Belt also has shashka (sword) fittings on the belt.
And yes those are gazari , good eye Betty.
I am in process of making a few sets of gazari for a museum in Germany.
Original set belonged to tsar Nicholas
  • Dear John; I love these Caucasian belts. I have reserved one in Amman but I am eyeing another one since quite some time. It is rather expensive but eventually, I will get it - as always... I love your collection! Congratulations. Peter

  • It is difficult to find them in original condition. So many of them are redone or a variety of random pieces are put together and in most cases incorrectly.
I have redone 100 of belts for people including making copies of pieces to complete the belts to original condition. Including niello. The leather is one of the hardest and most time consuming because you start with raw hide and work the leather with oils and bees wax. Also understanding what pieces go where on the belt and how to properly attach each piece on.
But it's a labor of love to me once a belt is brought back to original condition.
  • That sounds fascinating.

So, you are a silver smith, John? How did you come to do such very specialised work, if you don't mind me asking? The pieces you have shown us are really wonderful.

  • Not a silversmith by trade but rather necessity.
I am a member of a Russian museum and a collector of Cretan and Caucasian arms and uniforms etc. In the 70 and 80s these items were very hard to find so I had to learn to repair and manufacture what I needed. It's become a passion.
