  • This very beautiful. The center disc - turquoise? - reminds me of designs from China and the Asian region. I guess, that this design could have come long time ago through the Silk Road to Turkey. I enjoy your postings very much - a delight and rare on this site! Peter
  • The blue stone is indeed a turquoise.  This type of headgear was worn by both Turks and Kurds of the Adiyaman-Malatya area.

  • Charming.

  • For those who are interested - Some technical clarification regarding the structure of this ‘kôfi’ (headgear): 1) The base is a felt cap.  2) Around the cap, an (antique) brocaded silk ‘poşi’ (scarf) is winded, and fixed with a few stitches (to the cap, and to itself, so that it cannot fall off, nor unwind).

    3) Then the ‘tepelik’ is fixed to the hat with several stitches (generally directly to the cap, or – if this is technically difficult – to the ‘poşi’).  4) Finally the ‘alınlık’ (forehead jewel) is fixed, by means of the three hooks that are generally present (one in the center, and one on each end) and which are hooked/inserted into the poşi.

Unlike many other festive/bridal/ceremonial headgears from Anatolia, that have to be mounted again each time that they are worn, this compact ‘kôfi’ can be put away as a whole and will be ready to wear again in seconds.
