Gold and diamond earrings from north Morocco

This style was adopted around 1930 by jewish ladies influenced by the trends coming then from europe. Gold alloy of 18KT with copper (hence the reddish colour, nomore used nowadays, as ladies now prefer a shiny yellow) and rose cut diamonds.

  • here is a photo shot by Besancenot from mid 1930's showing a jewish lady from Rabat wearing similar earrings

  • It's wonderful to see the old photo with a good image of the jewelry she's wearing. Excellent!

  • The shorter necklace she's wearing is beautiful. Is that typical of the time as well?

  • Speaking of Jewish ladies, is that a wig I detect?  This is the first time I've seen wig that is so plainly a wig.  I know that it was/ is common in Europe for Orthodox Jewish women to wear one.

  • Fantastic set!  The reddish gold is still popular in Tunis, although only 9 kt here.  Love the old photo too!

  • Thanx for your comments

@Suzan: i too like it when i find a photo showing the jewelry in its context, it is worth thousands of words and gives us many information as well as a much more alive picture of the pieces we collect

@Preethi: Absolutely, especially for jewish ladies wich were more in contact with influences coming from europe, very fine pearl necklaces with hollow gold beads with a filgree central pendant a heart or sometimes a "chaddai" (god's name in hebrew)

Muslim ladies would prefer a necklace with many more strands of pearls that supports a huge pearl (actually a pierced chunk) of jade (called " yemeni stone" in reference of its eastern  origin), they will also stick to plain gold necklaces

@Hillary: Morocco was called the land of the "wigged jews", nowhere else in the muslim land you could find such a wealth and inventiveness in the wigs used by jewish ladies, from simple silk threads to cow's tails, ostrich feathers and complete silver mesh headresses!!

  • Beautiful quality earrings seldom seen now. Nice photo !

  • Great earrings, ayis, with a truly informative description, and an illuminating photo as well - you really have done a great job.

  • Thank you for the comments.

These earrings belong to my mother, she discovered old jewelry from morocco some 10 years ago when i began my silver collecting and ever since whenever she wants to buy a little piece to wear she would buy old stuff and take seriously my advices.

She is not regretting it now, as she has secured a couple of pieces a very reasonnable price while now they are even more scarce and completely prohibitively priced, she is also delighted to lend them when there is a young girl to marry to wear on her wedding, sticking to the old tradition of lending jewelry to other people when they don"t got some.

  • ayis, - All that is really great to read. It is wonderful that you should look after your mother's needs in the way that you do, and use your expertise in the process. It is also gratifying, I personally feel as a husband, to see a woman close to you wear jewellery which you really approve of - so the process is constructively mutual in that respect! Keep up the good work, for both your sakes, I feel!!
